Here is the continuation of the last post I made.
This is a great place to write about the word “Love” and how God has been revealing this word to me.
1 John 4:8 teaches:
8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
…because God is love. If God is love and God is infinite and perfect, then isn’t He perfectly love? That means He cannot love more or love less. If He could love more or less, then is He really even God? The answer is God cannot love more or less because he is perfectly love. If God, being perfectly love, then what better gift to give us than Him being perfect love? REST IN THAT.
Now what better time to look at 1 Corinthians 13: 3-8:
3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.
Read this passage and stop to think about God as perfect love. Rest in this. Ponder the thoughts of God. How can I glorify Christ through an attempt to portray these attributes in my life by the grace of God?
If God is perfect, shouldn’t that give you confidence? This is another word God has placed on my heart to meditate upon. Confidence in the truth of His word and His promises. Confidence in His infallible written word.
Unconditional was the other word. Think about this word in two ways in relation to God’s love. First, what is conditional? Conditional love means you love something based on a condition. For example, let’s say you love your spouse because he or she is a wonderful parent. Well that is a condition to love. What happens when the kids move out and he or she doesn’t play the role of parent daily anymore?
Now view it as unconditional. I love my spouse because _______. Because why? Nothing will ever go in that blank if you love unconditionally. There isn’t a condition that exists for your love. That is how God loves us to make His glory known to everyone. Isn’t this awesome? This is another great example of God’s grace. If there was a condition to why God loves us then what happens when we fail to meet that condition? Because being humans we will fail to meet all conditions at some point in time.
Now here is the kicker. As humans we are worthless. Isaiah 64:6 states:
6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
Therefore, if every act we engage in, though we may think righteous, are like filthy rags. In other words we cannot be righteous apart from God. Therefore, it can also be said, you cannot love unconditionally apart from God. To love unconditionally is to love with a love given by God who is love.
Rest in this.
