Extreme Challenge
This is the daily reading your volunteer will be focused on today.
Romans 15:20
My aim is to evangelize where Christ has not been named, so that I will not build on someone else’s foundation,
This verse is both the calling and the challenge for Extreme Missionary Adventures. As we became involved in the Jesus Film Ministry in Central America we discovered that there had already been a lot of evangelical work done in most all of the cities and even in the smaller towns. Many resemble North American cities with a church on almost every corner. But we also discovered that there are thousands and thousands of small, remote villages scattered all up through the mountains that have not heard the Good News. Many of these villages of 100 to 500 people have no church of any kind, no Gospel witness, most do not have even one Christian in them!
You may be wondering how can this be when only a few miles away there are towns and cities with dozens of churches of every denomination. It’s simply because these villages are physically hard to get to–they are isolated by terrain that can be very challenging to cross. Some can be reached with a good 4-wheel drive truck but many require hiking along mule trails to reach. That’s one of the reasons why we call it Extreme Missionary Adventures. It requires individuals willing to go to the extreme for the Lord, willing to give up some of their comforts and security for a little while so others can learn about the Savior (Phil 1:29). As David Livingstone said “We want men (and women) who will come where there is no road”. Are you willing (and able) to hike for hours over mountainous terrain to share the Gospel? Jesus did! His disciples did! Are you prepared to spend a night or two without a nice soft bed? How about going without a shower or even running water? (2 Tim 2:12) Remember, Jesus did not even have a place to lay His head (Luke 9:58). Should we expect better accommodations than our Lord?
