Day 3 of Trip

Extreme Creation

This is the daily reading your volunteer will be focused on today.

Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky proclaims the work

of His hands.

Look around you today at the extreme beauty and absolute magnificence of God’s creation.  Our lives have become so fast-paced that we never slow down to enjoy the beauty of a sunrise or the wonder of birds as they build their nests.  We are so busy multi-tasking the items on our to-do-lists that we don’t even notice the awesome creativity of God.  We need to take our cue from the great saints of years gone by who knew how to worship God through admiring His creation.

In the fourth century Saint Augustine wrote this about the great Book of Nature, “Some people, in order to discover God, read books.  But there is a great book: the very appearance of created things.  Look above you!  Look below you!  Note it.  Read it.  God, whom you want to discover, never wrote that book with ink.  Instead He set before your eyes the things that He made.  Can you ask for a louder voice than that?  Why, heaven and earth shout to you: ‘God made me!’”  Martin Luther tells us, “God writes the Gospel, not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars”.

Slow down!  Praise God for the awesome wonder of all that He has made.  Allow Him to speak to you this week through His Word, through His Spirit and also through His Creation.  Saint John Damascene wrote, “The whole earth is a living icon of the face of God”.  What do you see in the living icon of God’s face?  What is God telling you through the Book of Nature?
